Dimensions: 16 × 20 inches
Artist: Louis Saurel is a multi-talented Haitian painter who currently resides in the neighborhoods of Bourdon and Musseau, on the outskirts of Pétion-Ville. Now in his forties, Saurel has been immersed in art since childhood, growing up in a family of artists. Alongside his brother, who is also a painter, he discovered his passion for art at the age of twelve. After school at the Lycée, Saurel would visit the workshop of the renowned artist Jean René Jérôme, where he received mentorship and guidance that helped shape his artistic path. For Saurel, painting was never a necessity but a true calling.
Description:
Where the Water Rests is a meditative landscape by Louis Saurel, capturing the serenity and quiet beauty of Haiti’s natural environment. Rounded trees in rich shades of green hug the edge of a gentle river, while bursts of red flowers in the foreground offer a striking contrast — a reminder that even in stillness, life blooms boldly.
The composition draws the eye inward, toward the center of the water, where soft ripples reflect the sky’s calming blues. In the background, delicate palms line the horizon, blending earth, water, and sky in perfect harmony. Saurel’s signature palette-knife technique adds depth and dimension, giving texture to the trees and fluidity to the water.
This painting is a visual exhale — an invitation to pause, reflect, and find peace in the simplicity of the land. It’s not just a landscape, but a tribute to Haiti’s quiet corners and the restorative power of nature.
