Title: Lanmè

Date: 2025
From: Pétion-Ville, Haiti
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 16 × 12 inches
Artist: Louis Saurel is a multi-talented Haitian painter who currently resides in the neighborhoods of Bourdon and Musseau, on the outskirts of Pétion-Ville. Now in his forties, Saurel has been immersed in art since childhood, growing up in a family of artists. Alongside his brother, who is also a painter, he discovered his passion for art at the age of twelve. After school at the Lycée, Saurel would visit the workshop of the renowned artist Jean René Jérôme, where he received mentorship and guidance that helped shape his artistic path. For Saurel, painting was never a necessity but a true calling.

Description:
Lanmè captures the quiet majesty of Haiti’s coast — where fishermen and their boats move with the rhythm of the wind and tide. The sails, swollen with the breath of the sea, rise like prayers toward the horizon, carrying both labor and hope.Saurel’s delicate interplay of light and reflection invites the viewer into a moment of calm before the day’s return. The water mirrors the sky, blurring the line between earth and heaven — a poetic reminder that survival, for many Haitians, is found between these two vast blues.
