Mache Puilboreau

$450.00
SOLD OUT

Date: 2024

From: Port-au-Prince

Medium: Oil on Canvas

Dimensions : 20 inches x 24 inches

Artist: Polyte Misseau is a Haitian painter from the small coastal village of Pestel, now residing in the slum of Jalousie of Pétion-Ville in the West Department. Recognizing early on that staying in his picturesque hometown would limit his opportunities for survival, Polyte made the difficult choice to leave Pestel on his twentieth birthday in search of better prospects in Port-au-Prince. From a young age, Polyte displayed a strong interest in drawing and painting. Upon arriving in the capital, he refined his craft by learning from experienced painters. In 2002, he completed his first painting—a fisherman on the beach—evoking the fond memories of his life in Pestel. As his artistic journey progressed, Polyte began developing a signature style, focusing on minimalist market scenes. His distinctive approach involves using just two colors—a background hue and a single color to outline merchants and their goods—creating a striking yet simple visual narrative.

Description : This minimalist painting is a sister piece to Mache Mariani, a bustling market near Carrefour in the West Department, known for its vibrant atmosphere and local charm. Using just two colors, Polyte masterfully captures the energy of market day. A bright white background contrasts striking black lines outlining the figures of merchants and shoppers, creating a vivid sense of movement and life. The simplicity of the composition enhances the depth of the scene, with the minimalist approach allowing the viewer to focus on the interactions and daily rhythms of the market.
